Az első világháborús veterán zsidó borbély a megszólalásig hasonlít országa diktátorára, Hynkelre. A borbély azonban háborús sérülése miatt egészen a harmincas évekig amnéziában szenvedett, ezért meglepetésként érik az időközben bekövetkezett változások.
